Young Europe – The Book
It’s the start of a new race. Because it’s better off this way.
Because loving is not what’s important. The important thing is not to suffer. It is imperative to eradicate the collateral effects. Everything, leaving out any kind of information. From culture to music. Josephine lives on a longboat in the middle of the sea. With no oars.
She and the others devotedly ignore. She skipped every generation. This is the true innovation. They skip their own even. She doesn’t know Alicia’s Queen or Radiohead either. Kurt Cobain is a shadow and the Beatles a name she’s heard, but can relate to nothing. Nothing. France is the world’s biggest democracy because someone said so, but it’s better not to ask where Madrid, or Chicago are. They’re a Google maps click away. 1968 is the year before 1969, Jean Luc Godard and Michel Gondry are nothing more than two names, maybe two patriots from the French Revolution.
Josephine is with the others. Each one of them on their longboat, alone, while the boat floats away, and leaves them at sea. Avenue du 8 mai 1945, number 25. Nineteenfortyfive. The day a war started. Or ended. Or somebody died. Not Napoleon, he’s older than that. No. Yes, he is. Asking your grand-father would be enough, Josephine. He’s still alive, he surely knows. Talking with your grand-father, for real. Getting him to tell you about the war. Talking with someone. Opening a book. Dreaming of something. No, nil. Napoleon,
1945. Napoleon is dead, he was exiled by the Nazis. Then they shot him. He was listening to Radiohead when they sailed him away to Elba, on the river. Who the others are and what they did, I don’t give a fuck.
È l’inizio di una nuova razza. Perché è meglio. Perché non è importante amare. È importante non soffrire. È imperativo eliminare gli effetti collaterali. Tutto escludendo ogni informazione. Josephine è oltre il pensare. Lei e gli altri devotamente ignorano. Ha saltato tutte le generazioni. Questa è la vera novità. Saltano anche la propria. Non conosce i Queen, ma nemmeno i Radiohead. Il giorno dell’inizio di una guerra. 0 della sua fine. 0 della morte di qualcuno. Non Napoleone, quello è più vecchio. No. Sì, è più vecchio. Basterebbe chiedere a tuo nonno, Josephine. È ancora vivo, lui saprebbe. Parlare con il nonno, parlare veramente. Farsi raccontare la guerra. Parlare con qualcuno. Aprire un libro. Sognare qualcosa. No, niente. Napoleone, 1945. Napoleone è morto, i nazisti l’hanno esiliato. Poi gli hanno sparato. Ascoltava i Radiohead mentre lo portavano via all’Isola d’Elba, sul fiume. “Young Europe” è una storia che ferisce in profondità. “Young Europe” is not only a novel. Matteo Vicino’ s book, actor, director and Bolognese musician, is part of a larger and more important project, result of an extraordinary insight of his author. In 2006, the Minister of the Interior, through the traffic police service, decides to change the approach used in relation to young people about the dramatic phenomenon of Saturday night road accidents, the first cause of death among teens. It was called a notice to find the most appropriate form of entertainment to communicate with new generations. The competition was won by Matteo Vicino’ s project “Icaro”, who wrote and staged a modern, complete and innovative play. The exhibit was repeated in a lot of italian theatre, from San Carlo of Naples to Politeama of Palermo. In 2008, it was taken in Bruxelles. The European Union, sure of the kindness of the project, authorized to spend some funds for the achievement of a larger project, called “Icaro”, which involved some European police forces. Matteo Vicino was elected to direct an audiovisual project that would be a training tool for young people. “From Falcone to Borsellino, up to Muse, through Orwell to Gilles Villeneuve and ketamine”. This is what provide to Young Europe its third cover. A challenge faced by Matteo Vicino with the telling of stories of three boys who live in the third millennium Europe. A generation to discover.
“Young Europe” non è solo un romanzo. Il libro di Matteo Vicino, attore, regista e musicista bolognese, si inserisce in un progetto più ampio e importante, frutto di una straordinaria intuizione del suo autore. Nel 2006 il Ministero dell’Interno, tramite il servizio di polizia stradale, decide di cambiare l’approccio usato nei confronti dei giovani riguardo al drammatico fenomeno delle stragi del sabato sera e degli incidenti stradali, prima causa di mortalità fra i ventenni. Viene indetto un bando di gara per trovare la forma di spettacolo più idonea a comunicare con le nuove generazioni. La gara viene vinta dal progetto “Icaro” di Matteo Vicino, che scrive e allestisce uno spettacolo teatrale moderno, innovativo e completo. La pièce è stata replicata in molti teatri italiani, dal San Carlo di Napoli al Politeama di Palermo. Nel 2008 è stata portata a Bruxelles. L’Unione Europea, convinta della bontà del progetto, ha dato il via libera ad alcuni fondi intesi alla realizzazione di un progetto più ampio, denominato appunto “Icarus”, che coinvolge alcuni corpi di polizia europei. A Matteo Vicino è stato affidato il compito di dirigere un progetto audiovisivo che diventasse strumento di formazione per i giovani.
